About the Norfolk Deed Abstracts (see also Princess Anne County deeds)

NORFOLK COUNTY / TOWN / BOROUGH / CITY DEED ABSTRACTS

The Berent Research Notebooks and Loose Papers, a vast majority of which have been scanned and are included on this website, contain primarily abstracts of deeds of Norfolk, Virginia (1600s to 1900s). (There are also a substantial number of abstracts of original land patents, but those have not yet been scanned.) Most of the deeds selected offer substantial information on the particular property's ownership, including the landowner's name and property's description -- often not only of the property being deeded but also land within the area, especially land bordering the property. While it would be nearly impossible, even in the space of six years of research, to trace the ownership of all the land in Norfolk throughout all its history, the intention has been to select a wide enough and useful enough array of deeds that will make it relatively easy to locate fairly specific locations anywhere in Norfolk and quickly to narrow down one's research to a specific landowner or time period.

ARRANGEMENT OF, AND ACCESS TO, THE ONLINE DEED-ABSTRACTS MATERIAL

Berent compiled his deed abstracts in notebooks (arbitrarily labelled as Notebooks "A" and "B") as well as on loose pages (Loose Papers). The notebooks contain numerically arranged Items, each Item being an abstract of either a single deed or a chain of deeds tracing the ownership of a specific property back in time. Note, however, that the arrangement of these items is not, in most cases, in a strict geographic order. That is, for instance, the property being deeded in item #5 is not necessarily adjacent to, or even near, the property being deeded in item #6.
Berent's Loose Papers are arranged by page number rather than individual item number.
Two indexes are available: The Name Index of names of landowners and other persons mentioned in the deeds; and the Geographic Index of placenames mentioned in the deeds. The Geographic Index also summarizes the locations generally covered for selected items/pages.
To access the abstracts, use the links provided in the right-hand column. (Those links are also included on all the pages.)
