"Located northeast of Bainbridge Avenue and Gilbert Street (now part of the Naval Base), the Powhatan Oak was the largest and oldest oak tree on the grounds of the Jamestown Exposition.  When the tree was removed decades ago, human remains, tentatively identified as belonging to a Native American, were discovered within its roots and reburied on the same spot in a coffin."
(from Jamestown Exposition: American Imperialism on Parade, Amy Yarsinske, Arcadia Publishing, Charleston, S.C., 1999, vol. 2, p.21)
