Lambert's Point Annexation Movement
(For more Norfolk geography tidbits, click here.)

The move to annex Lambert's Point had begun at least as early as the time when Park Place was annexed in 1902.  A Virginian-Pilot article written by an "Annexationist" in 1905 presented arguments for its annexation at that time. The article begins:

"The time is at hand when we, a congested suburban population, who have suffered long, must look to some organized system of government for the protection of our property, our homes, our health.  This we can only do by starting right and keeping right.  We need this organized government, whereby we may obtain improvements and Hampton Roads Times Magazine
HamptonRoadsTimes.comprotection.  The question is, How? Standing in the shadow of what will some day be one of the greatest cities in the United States, should not we ask her to look after our welfare, and in time let us help to make her greater and thereby add prestige?
We have in our territory, I am informed, about four or five million dollars' worth of taxable property.  What is becoming of the taxes which are annually paid on this property? Are we benefited or are we duped?
What we need is immediate, permanent public improvement.  We have been a village for fifteen or twenty years, during which time property has enhanced in value over two thousand per cent, according to a statement made by Mr. C.T. Shumadine, who has always resided here.  During this period what permanent public improvements can we point out, to mark our progress? A few incandescent electic lights, and for our fire protection three water plugs (recently installed).  This represents the entire outfit.  Should this satisfy us, an American people?..."
