Fox Hunting in Norfolk, 1905
(For more Norfolk geography tidbits, click here.)
The days of fox hunting and live-bird hunting were numbered in 1905. An article in the Virginian-Pilot of February 23, 1905, in telling about a recent live-bird shoot, noted that its promoter, Harry Westacott, president of the Norfolk Live Bird and Target association, had been threatened with an injunction to prevent it. At the close of the day’s shoot, he was quoted as saying, “It’s all off for me, no more pigeon shoots while I am in Norfolk.” A retired naval officer, Lieut. C.P. Shaw, the article said, “headed the movement to prevent the match, and was backed up by a number of prominent prachers.” The SPCA had become involved in the dispute and worked out a compromise. “It is understood,” the article concluded, “that a bill will be introduced in the legislature at its next session prohibiting live-bird shooting in Virginia.”
