Theodorick Armistead and Armistead Bridge
(For more Norfolk geography tidbits, click here.)

At an earlier date, Theodorick Armistead, for whom the Armistead Bridge (and Armistead Bridge Road and Armistead Road – as well as Armistead Avenue, which goes northward to 28th Street) was named, lived in the same area as, or close to, the Newcomb farm. The following run-away-slave announcement refers to Mr. Armistead:

"Ten Dollars Reward.  RUN away from the subscriber, about three weeks ago, a likely negro fellow by the name of GEORGE, formerly the property of Capt. Aaron Jeffery of the Borough of Norfolk; he went to town to see his wife who lives at Mr. Theoderick Armistead's, and has been seen lurking about Norfolk and Portsmouth; his mother belongs to Mr. James Young of Gosport; he has been seen working on board of vessels.  All persons are hereby forewarned employing, harbouring or carrying him out of this state at their peril.  ARTHUR BUTT.  Norfolk county, August 29."
(Norfolk Herald, August 29, 1801)
