The state has defined the area of "Tidewater Virginia," for the purpose of establishing which areas are affected by the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act (1988) to include all the Northern Neck, Middle Peninsula, Virginia Peninsula, Eastern Shore, and South Hampton Roads as well as the bordering counties farther west (from north to south: Arlington, Fairfax, Prince William, Stafford, Spotsylvania, Caroline, Hanover, New Kent, Henrico, Chesterfield, Prince George) and the independent cities within or alongside those bordering counties (Falls Church, Fairfax, Alexandria, Fredericksburg, Richmond, Colonial Heights, Hopewell, and Petersburg).
