Shumadine Farm
(For more Norfolk geography tidbits, click here.)

The Shumadine farm tract (from which Shumadine Road takes its name – and to which the road leads) was located just west of Killam Avenue, and extended from at least 41st Street (today 45th St.) – very near the Lambert's Point Knitting Mills – all the way north to Tanner's Creek at today's 49th Street.  (The tract is identified on our 1921and 1939 basemaps.) The Shumadine farmhouse (see figure ZZZ), located on 49th Sreet, would later be torn down to make way for a dormitory for the then-Old Dominion College.  At the time, the house was said to have been about a hundred years old.
