Oystering Near the Granby Street Bridge

Rogers Cathey (b. 1934) remembers when it was not unusual to see 8 or 10 oyster boats at a time tonging for oysters during the season in the waters off of Lakewood -- between the Granby Street bridge and the Lakewood bridge areas -- up to the 1940s.  He also recalled that the water was very clear and sandy; and wonders whether sewage dumped may have ultimately helped cause its dirtying.  (Rogers Cathey, Interview by Irwin Berent, February 2004)
