Norfolk Terminal Railroad, 1880s
(For more Norfolk geography tidbits, click here.)
In 1882 almost two miles of waterfront and 325 acres of land were purchased in Lambert's Point for a coal pier that could handle the coal soon to be coming from the N&W through Norfolk via the Norfolk Terminal Railroad. In 1884, 5.3 miles of track were laid for the Norfolk Terminal Railroad, which would run from the N&W terminus at Newton’s Creek to the Lambert's Point pier facilities. (Norfolk & Western Railway, p.46) The line ran from the terminus, roughly northerly through Huntersville, then curving northwestward through Lindenwood, and finally turning westward to Lambert’s Point along 23rd Street to the Elizabeth River. Most of the same route exists today.
The new coal pier, Lambert’s Point Coal Pier No.1, was built, and it opened for service on March 12, 1885.
