"Hundreds of Skeletons Dug Up
Mound of Indian Graves Excavated at Sewall's Point
And Remains of Red Men Were Exposed to View
---
Negro Workmen Fled When They Saw Bones"
"Several hundred skeletons of Indians have been dug up at Pine Beach by workmen engaged in making improvements there and from the character of the excavation thousands of skeletons are there that have not yet been unearthed.
The bones that have been brought to light were buried in a circle, two or three deep, and are in an excellent state of preservation. For several weeks Contractor Backus has been engaged in making improvements in and around the Pine Beach hotel and there has been a great amount of earth removed for walkways and other changes. Tuesday while a gang was engaged in excavating a mound was struck that teemed with human skeletons. Mr. Backus thinks there are thousands in it. He said yesterday:
'There are hundreds out of the ground now and heaven only knows how many more are still in the ground, but visible to anyone who cares to see them. We have stopped work at that particular spot, as we could not make much progress in the mine of human bones and the men were not anxious to handle them!'..."
