End of the Trolley/Streetcar and the Coming of the Bus
(For more Norfolk geography tidbits, click here.)
Although the last trolley didn't disappear from Norfolk's streets until around 1947, the streetcar was being phased out by 1925, when 36 buses were purchased by the Virginia Railway and Power Company (see the picture of the new bus…..). The new "auto buses" were described by the local newspaper:
"The bus is designed after the metropolitan passenger automobiles in use for heavy traffic in New York and other large cities. An orange color scheme, in keeping with the standard color of the traction company used on its trolley cars, is used on the auto buses. The buses were built by the Reo Company, and were designed and sold to the traction company through R.G. Edgerton Company of Norfolk…. The rear interior [has] large comfortable seats and large space in which passengers may move. Each bus will seat 21 passengers and is automatically heated."
