Creek Names and Indian Presence

     The names of two creeks in the heart of Norfolk point clearly to the presence of Indians: Indian Towne Creek (and Indian Towne Point) and Queen Graves Creek, which were located at twoHampton Roads Times Magazine
      HamptonRoadsTimes.com branches of Tanner’s Creek (today Lafayette River), the north eastern and western branches respectively.  They intersect approximately at the eastern tip of today’s Roland Park (the point at the tip was known as Stephens Point by the mid-1800s.  And Indian Pole Bridge (today the Granby Street Bridge), located near the mouth of the southern branch of Tanner’s Creek, was named for either an Indian pole or pool located less than a mile south of the intersection of the two creeks.
