Atlantic City Redevelopment
(For more Norfolk geography tidbits, click here.)
The Atlantic City Redevelopment Project began in 1957; it covered the entire Atlantic City area, including a large swath of land north of Fort Norfolk all the way to Raleigh Avenue as well as the land east of Fort Norfolk all the way to its border with the Hague on its east and southeast and the Elizabeth River on its south – all tolled, over 140 acres. When the main phases of the project were complete in 1979, the landscape was radically altered: By the time of the 1966 basemap…, much had already been altered: A new extension of Brambleton Avenue created an expressway that cut through the area – obliterating Patrick Henry School, Wingfield Street (originally C Avenue), Camp Avenue, and Poole Street, and much of Second and Third streets, and making obsolete the old Atlantic City/York Street Bridge, which soon was removed.
